It's almost back-to-school time, and I thought an apple design was due... This one was made to go along with What a Pair, and I think another fruit tree will be in the works in the future. Sunday Sketch ... a little late.

This is my Sunday Sketch... just didn't get a chance to post it yesterday! Hopefully it will evolve into a fun pumpkin party painting very soon! This is only my first sketch for Sunday Sketches (hosted this week by Heather at Rose Hill Designs - go check out her adorable sketch for this week!) but I hope to participate in many more!

I have Fall on the brain lately! I'm not a summer person at all, so I'm thrilled that in a few weeks it will be September and well on the way to cooler weather, beautiful colors, and all the best holidays!

I'm so excited for Halloween this year for a bunch of reasons:

1. I will be able eat candy. I haven't had sweets in way too long. Normally my husband is the one who eats the first round of candy we buy for the trick-or-treaters... then we have to go back to the store and buy candy all over again. This year we may have to make three trips...

2. I'll have an almost-two-month old to dress up. Oh, the cuteness. We already have several costumes ready to go. Let the torture begin. :)

3. Last year, we hit a major after Halloween sale and bought a ton of stuff for next to nothing. We went from having one pumpkin candle as our yearly decoration to now having two full tubs of stuff ready to be used and really get in the spirit of things.

4. Our annual black spaghetti, homemade meatballs, Phantom wine, and a scary movie. (If you haven't tried it, the black spaghetti ends up looking like worms after you cook it - perfect for a spooky dinner. Last year I took leftovers to my Grandma and she wouldn't even eat it. Great Halloween fun.)

5. And lastly, after Halloween, we're one step closer to Christmas, which I'm fanatical about. I love my holidays. Let the festivities (and holiday inspired designs) begin!

So for my first Sweet Saturdays submission, I'm posting an old painting - Cupcakes. Sweet Saturdays is featured on the blog of Diana Evans, a very talented artist who seems to also love cupcakes! Check her out!

Unfortunately for me, because the baby has been measuring big, I haven't been able to eat cupcakes lately... I've been on a low carb, low sugar diet for months now, and let me tell you that is not so sweet! But hopefully in several weeks, I'll be able to enjoy all the things I've been missing, plus my new, even sweeter, baby!

Sketchbooks...

So a big part of a fun of a design is the first stage... sketching it. I've had a sketchbook on hand since high school (we won't mention how many years ago that was), and I've always loved the doodling and random things that come out on the pages. I love to look back through the books and revisit old ideas and laugh at some of the sillier scribbles.

Not too long ago, my husband was looking through one of my sketchbooks, and he found a drawing I'd done of him that I have no memory of making. If you know my husband, this is hysterical. I imagine quickly jotting this down while trying to work on something serious as he is prancing around in front of me trying to get some attention! I can only assume that the floating head next to him is me, not amused. We had a good laugh over this, and he now uses it for his blog. I think everyone should keep a sketchbook just to catch these little gems on paper!

Anyway, that's a very long intro to my real point - I'm thinking about being a part of the Sketchbook Project. I toyed with the idea last year, but never committed to it. Now might be a better time - here's the gist... You pay 25 bucks and they send you a small sketchbook with a bar code on it. It tours around the US for a while (no DC stops yet - boo), then gets a permanent home in the Brooklyn Art Library. With the bar code, you can tell whenever someone checks out your book to read/see, which is a nice feature.

The best part for me would be the extra inspiration to sketch things other than what I plan on making into designs for my shop. These days, almost all my sketching involves trees and birds and things that could turn into bigger paintings, so it would be nice to have incentive to draw other things and see where it goes.
I'd get the book in September and have until January to finish it and send it back. This is extra cool because that will be the first four months of my son's life - could make for some interesting, sleep-deprived ideas for sure. So, we'll see what I decide...

I have been away too long! Sorry to leave you hanging. I'm back though, and thought I'd let you in on what's been keeping me away!

New paintings this year have been few and far between... I found out in January that I was expecting my first child! That's pretty much taken up a LOT of time this year. :) Now that I'm in the home stretch (only around a month left!), I'm trying to get back in the habit of creating, updating my shop, and posting news here! I left my teaching job recently to get ready for the baby... or as ready as I can get... and my plan is to stay home, be a full time parent, and get back to art! I'm very excited about it all, but also know it won't be easy to find the balance at first. So if my blog posts consist of baby pictures, and the only new items I'm posting are baby announcements, please bear with me. ;)

I've been keeping busy getting my house ready for a third person, and thanks to family it's getting done a lot easier than I thought. I did have to forfeit my "art room" though, so finding space to paint may be a challenge. So far (while painting some forest animals for the nursery) it's been my living room coffee table, which can't last. I also know in a month, this will be the least of my worries!!

So stay tuned... Soon I'll be updating the promotions, adding new items to the shop, and hopefully able to accept custom requests again!

   Finally, something new to share! After a crazy several months, I'm now getting around to posting some NEW designs! I have sketch books full of designs that have been building up, waiting for me to have the time to get them painted!

   So here's the first release... It's called "My Valentine", so I had to get this up in time for V-day. I used the "Cupcakes" style to make another sweet tree for the sweet little birds.

  This one may be in time for the upcoming holiday, but don't be surprised if you see some not-so-seasonal designs being posted really soon! I have drawings from last Halloween and Christmas that haven't made it here yet!

Happy Holidays, everyone! It's been a crazy month for me (and everyone else, I'm sure)! Sorry for the lack of posts. A couple rounds of illness after Thanksgiving, getting ready for the holidays, a wedding anniversary, having some work done on the house, travelling for New Years, and then my 30th birthday.... whew. Needless to say, I probably won't be posting much for the next few weeks either, but hopefully I'll get back to it after all the fun dies down. More new products from zazzle... They are now offering iPhone and iPad cases. I know little about these as I don't own either. In fact, I'm still using a cell phone that I'm pretty sure I got in 2005. :) It can't take pictures, there's no internet connection, and I think I've only used the 'text' feature twice (gasp!)...

One of the great things about selling on zazzle is the ease of communicating with customers. With the click of the mouse, they can email me with any questions or design requests they might have. I get a lot of customization questions, and I always love hearing from people considering purchasing my designs... what could be more flattering?!
But, I almost never hear from anyone after they have ordered. It would be awesome if we (zazzle sellers) could follow up with buyers to make sure everything turned out okay, but we have no access to customers personal information. SO, when I got an email from a recent customer asking me if she could blog about my designs, I was more than thrilled about it! I grew up hanging all of our laundry on huge clotheslines in our backyard. We didn't get a dryer until I was in my teens, and even then it was only used when the weather was bad. Whew...finally the sales have returned! I guess zazzle was doing some sort of testing in their marketplace last month that ended up affecting a lot of shopkeeper's sales in August. News and such...

Just a reminder; today is the last day for free shipping over at my shop. I'm bummed about this because I've been so busy lately that I haven't even been able to take advantage of it! Hope some of you can!

As for future promo's and codes, I'm going to start posting them under the "Promotions" tab up there at the top of the page. Last weekend I spent some time using blogger's new template designer thingy, and I realized I could add tabs... so I did. :) Instead of creating blog posts, I'll just update the Promotions page with the most current sales, etc.

In other news, my work scedule has changed (for the worse), and I'm not getting home until much later than usual. That doesn't leave me with as much time for painting or blogging, so the blogs here may get even more infrequent than they were. Hopefully this won't be permanent and I can get back to posting new designs really soon. :(

Come to think of it, my very first bird design involved dessert... I saw a picture of this raspberry cake in a magazine. It looked really good, and since I couldn't cook it, I painted it instead. :) I'd say that's worth posting, too. :)

I was having a fairly crappy day until I came across this video posted by a friend on facebook...

I'm always behind on knowing about the latest viral videos, so you may already have seen this. It was new to me, and really made my day. It's kind of impossible to be upset when this guy is getting so much pleasure out of something as simple as a rainbow. Yeah, it's over the top, but it is a double rainbow...all the way. ;)

Today as I was trying to finish up sketching a few new paintings, my cat decided she was more important. I spent some time trying to fight off the cuteness, but who am I to disagree? She couldn't be moved. :)

Autumn Welcome

Wow, I can't believe I've neglected to post for this long! Things have been busy... work got busy, weekends got busy, and our internet service has been spotty until recently (whew, glad it's back). Just thought I'd get on here and make a post to get back in the swing of things! I'll spare you the "recent sales" post that I would normally do because it would take too long to link to a month and a half's worth of sales (which is a good thing! yay!)... So I'll just post some of my favorite sales - My business cards.
